CLINICS - GAMPOPA AND AMITABHA

GAMPOPA CLINIC

HISTORICALLY

A community of more that 60,000 inhabitants (mostly Tibetan refugees) live at Dali, situated 5km from Darjeeling, in extreme conditions.
There was no clinic no pharmacy and no dispensary. The government did send in medicines but these were not regularly given and so the chance of effective treatment was low.

To help the local population the Dali monastery constructed the clinic Gampopa with the help of a number of sponsors.

THE CLINICS AIMS

Monastery Druk Toupten Sangag Choeling established the clinic in1994. Since then the clinic sees everyone who needs it. The medicines are allopathic and Tibetan and are free to those who cannot afford it. There is electrocardiogram equipment and an X-ray machine. The clinic has a dormitory with 12 beds and 2 single rooms and sees between 70 to 100 people every day.

CAMPAIGN TO CONTROL TUBERCULOSIS

Tuberculosis is present in the majority of countries today and has expanded beyond the third world countries. The treatment is long and expensive. With bad nutrition and weakened immune system tuberculosis can spread easily in conditions of poor hygene.

There is a campaign in place to control tuberculosis and typhoid. These campaigns send out information to schools and the local community.
Even though Darjeeling is situated at 2,000 metres, tuberculosis is rampant because of the very humid climate.
We are helping to get some control on the TB problem in this area.

AMITABHA CLINIC
